What is E-mycin?

It stops bacteria from multiplying by reducing the protein that bacteria need for growth and allowing the immune system to kill off the weakened bacteria. It can be an alternative to penicillin for patients allergic to penicillin. It is used to treat bacterial infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, whooping cough, acne, mouth, ear, intestine, lung, urinary tract and skin infections. It cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How is E-mycin used?
E-mycin is usually taken orally 3 to 4 times a day for a period of 7 to 21 days depending on the patient's condition. The medication should be taken whole and not chewed, split or crushed. It is not recommended to take more or less of the medication as prescribed as it may have adverse effects, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. To prevent an upset stomach it is recommended to take the medication along with a meal or a glass of milk. As with all antibiotics, patient should complete the full cycle prescribed by a doctor as stopping the medication may allow the bacteria to come back and become resistant to the antibiotic.
