Tianeptine and Depression

Tianeptine is an antidepressant that may be prescribed for those suffering from moderate to severe depression. It works to help regulate the amount of the chemical in the brain known as serotonin that is produced. When too much serotonin is being produced a person is likely to have a lower mood. When the levels are reduced though the mood can improve.

Tianeptine Dosage

The amount of Tianeptine that a patient needs depends on their lifestyle, level of depression, and many other variables. It is recommended that a patient takes Tianeptine every day even if they are feeling better. It may take several weeks of use before someone is able to notice an improvement in their mood. This type of medication usually has to be taken three times per day.

Tianeptine Precautions

Tianeptine shouldn’t be taken by anyone under 15 years of age. It is very important for a full assessment to be conducted by the doctor before Tianeptine is prescribed. A low dose will be started out and then a patient that seems to be doing well with it may need to take more. It can take several months to get the right amount of Tianeptine per dose correct.

The use of Tianeptine isn’t right for everyone. Patients that are taking MAOIs, that have had suicidal thoughts, women who are pregnant, and women who are nursing should refrain from taking it.

Individuals that have a history of drug abuse aren’t a good candidate for the use of Tianeptine as it can be habit forming for them. Individuals that abuse alcohol shouldn’t take Tianeptine as it can cause serious damage to their liver.

Tianeptine Side Effects

Most people find Tianeptine is well tolerated by their body. However, some side effects have been noted.

Those side effects include constipation, insomnia, dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, and vivid dreams. The side effects that are experienced usually will go away after a week or two of use. The risk of suicidal thoughts can increase when a person first starts taking Tianeptine so close supervision and support is very important.
