Uses

Methimez (Methimazole) is an antithyroid drug that inhibits thyroid hormone production - thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). It is an active metabolite of carbimazole, an antithyroid drug.

Methimez (Methimazole) is used for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis, as well as for the preparation for surgical treatment of thyrotoxicosis, and the preparation for treatment with radioactive iodine.

Dosage and Administration

Always follow your doctor`s instructions when using Luramax Methimez (Methimazole) to get the safest and most effective results from treatment. Typically, Methimez (Methimazole) is used in 1 tablet (10 mg) 3-4 times a day (every 6-8 hours) after meals with a glass of water.

Upon reaching remission (after 3–6 weeks), the dose is reduced every 5–10 days and gradually the minimum maintenance doses are selected.

The highest single dose is 10 mg, the highest daily dose is 40 mg.

Side effects

The use of Methimez (Methimazole) may cause side effects in some patients including:

  • nausea, vomiting,
  • headache, dizziness
  • itching, flushing, skin rash, urticaria
  • arthralgia
  • weakness
  • hair loss

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious or worrying symptoms.

Precautions

Methimez (Methimazole) should not be used during pregnancy unless there is a clear need. Methimez (Methimazole) can be prescribed to pregnant women only in rare cases where the expected benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.

The use of Methimez (Methimazole) in lactating women is possible only in cases where the potential benefit of treatment for the mother outweighs the potential risk of complications for the child.

When using Methimez (Methimazole) as a side effect, headaches and dizziness can occur. If these symptoms occur, stop immediately driving vehicles or other mechanisms.
