Lexapro (Escitalopram) and Depression

Lexapro (Escitalopram) is a type of medication that may be given to patients that suffer from high levels of anxiety or depression. This is categorized as feelings that last for longer than 5 months. It belongs to the classification of medications known as antidepressants. It is an SSRI that works by increasing the amount of serotonin. It is believed that when the levels of serotonin are too low it can cause a chemical imbalance.

Lexapro (Escitalopram) Dosage

Lexapro (Escitalopram) is to be taken once per day. It can be taken with food or without it. With this medication it is very important to take it every single day. Too often patients stop taking it once they feel better. Then they can end up in the same cycle again. For best results it should also be taken at the same time every day when possible.

The initial dose of Lexapro (Escitalopram) will be low, and then it will be evaluated in a week or two by your doctor. The goal is to work with them to find the right amount of it to take ongoing. It can take up to 4 weeks for a patient to start to experience the full benefits that this medication can offer.

There are some side effects that may be initially experienced but they should subside in a few weeks. They include headaches, fatigue, insomnia, and tingling in the extremities. If they don’t go away on their own your doctor can reduce the amount of Lexapro (Escitalopram) you take per day and that should help.

Lexapro (Escitalopram) Precautions

It is very important that you tell your doctor about any other products you use – prescription medications, over the counter products, and herbal remedies. Otherwise they may adversely react to this particular medication. That is especially true with the well known St. John’s Wort.

Not everyone is a good candidate for the use of Lexapro (Escitalopram). Those that have problems with their thyroid, kidneys, liver, or that have experienced seizures shouldn’t take it. Some individuals feel drowsy while taking it so until you know how it affects you it isn’t a good idea to operate machinery or any type of vehicle. It isn’t recommended to take alcohol with it.
