Belsomra (Suvorexant) is a new sleep aid that works by inhibiting a neurotransmitter call orexin. Orexin is one of the wake neurotransmitters. Belsomra (Suvorexant) is currently the only sleeping medicine to target this neurotransmitter.

Belsomra (Suvorexant) is a treatment for insomnia. It can help regulate the sleeping and waking cycle in people who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

Like most sleep aids, Belsomra (Suvorexant) can be habit-forming. Before taking Belsomra (Suvorexant), tell your doctor if you have had any problems with addiction in the past. You should also telll your doctor if you suffer from depression or have suffered from depression in the past, if you have sleep apnea, or if you have any form of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or other breathing disorder.

It is unknown if Belsomra (Suvorexant) has any effect on unborn babies or if it is secreted through breast milk. Discuss with your doctor if you can pregnant or trying to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.

Belsomra (Suvorexant) is only to be used by people 18 years and older.

The usual dose of Belsomra (Suvorexant) is 10mg taken just prior to bed time. In some cases a maximum dosage of up to 20mg can be prescribed. Take only the dosage prescribed by your doctor and follow all other instructions as given.
