What is Avodart?
Avodart with the active ingredient dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor type of medication. It works by blocking the conversion of the hormone testosterone to dihydrotestosterone in the prostate. It can be used alone or with other medication to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It will help improve urinary flow, decrease the risk of developing acute urinary retention and may reduce the chance for prostate surgery.

How is Avodart used?
Avodart should be taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The capsule can be taken with or without food but should be swallowed along with plenty of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the condition of the patient and their response to the medication. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not opened, chewed or crushed to prevent too much of the drug from being released at one time.

Adverse effects
Patients using Avodart may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Hair loss
  • Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Decrease in the amount of semen
  • Problems with ejaculation

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Discharge from nipples
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Peeling skin

Warnings
The medication should only be used in men. Avoid donating blood for at least 6 months after your treatment ends as the medication can be carried in the blood and can cause birth defects if a pregnant women receives a transfusion with blood containing the drug.

Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Avodart is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
