Simvastatin

Simvastatin and High Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a very common problem but one that requires medical treatment for many people to get it under control. Combined with exercise and a proper diet, Simvastatin may be able to help patients with such health concerns. When this medication is being taken the body won’t produce as much cholesterol as it used to.

A diet that is low in fat and low in sugar is an important part of being able to get cholesterol levels under control. Most of the time the doctor will help a patient with such a diet plan first. Then they will add the use of Simvastatin if additional help is needed. It is important to note though that if a person continues to eat a diet that is high in fat and sugar this medication alone won’t be enough to take care of the high cholesterol concerns.

Simvastatin Dosages

The daily recommended dose is from 20 mg to 40 mg per day. It is typical for the doctor to start a patient at the lower dose. Then it can be increased as needed to offer the best overall value to that individual. Routine blood work will be conducted in order to check cholesterol levels and that will influence the dosing.

Simvastatin Precautions

During the evaluation your doctor should ask you about any other forms of medication that you use. Make sure you are honest because plenty of them can cause adverse reactions to the body if they are mixed with Simvastatin. Your doctor will be able to identify if what you are taking will be a good combination with it or not.

Before using Simvastatin the liver should be checked. If there are problems then this medication isn’t a good one to consider taking. It is advised for periodic checking of the liver to be done during the course of the use of this medication. Depending on the overall health of the patient it may be necessary to take this medication for a very long time. Once the cholesterol levels are under control though the dose may be reduced.

Individuals that are taking Simvastatin shouldn’t consume any grapefruit or grapefruit juice. There are various side effects that may be present with the use of this medication. It isn’t a good idea to consume alcohol or tobacco while taking it as they can trigger more severe side effects.
